Las Vegas, May 27, 2016/ Blue Lotus Insurance Brokers is happy to announce that we have secured access to coverage for Uber/Lyft and other ride sharing, vehicle sharing, or other transportation network companies (TNC). Effective immediately we are able to bind policies that include coverage for personal use as well as Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3. This program is the only one available through the independent insurance channel.
Since TNC companies have entered the Nevada market, virtually all of the carriers in the insurance industry have backed away from providing coverage for this type of risk. Taking the traditional view, most carriers view this type of operation using a personal auto as a livery exposure. Livery is a fancy insurance term which means that you drive people to places on a for hire basis. This type of exposure has been historically regarded as a commercial risk that requires commercial coverage. In absence of a commercial policy which is typically unaffordable to casual TNC drivers, these drivers often mistakenly assume that their personal policy, or the coverage provided by the TNC, provides all of the protection that is needed. However, that is not the case.
Specifically, there are four exposures that TNC drivers face – personal use, Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3. Personal auto policies are designed to cover personal use. TNC policies cover Period 2 and Period 3, but there is a gap in coverage as no one covers Period 1. Until now!
For TNC drivers, that means no more lying to your insurance company. No more gaps between where your personal policy provides coverage and the TNC coverage kicks in. No more worrying about the coverage gap. No more praying that your policy will be increased, coverage will be reduced, or immediate cancellation by your current insurance company.
